Coach Nate Freier

Coach Nate Freier is veteran high school football coach with experience in four high school programs as a head and assistant football coach and remote advisor, in three states, over twenty-three seasons. 


Coach Freier recently left Red Wing High School after five seasons (2017-2021) as its head football coach. While at Red Wing, He is now doing volunteer offensive quality control work for Farmington HS. While at Red Wing, Coach Freier evolved a pistol power offense into a DUO-heavy RPO scheme and ran both 3-5 stack and 4-4 defensesHe served as the Wingers offensive coordinator in two of his five seasons and, at various times, also coached offensive and defensive line, tight ends, quarterbacks, and outside linebackers. While at Red Wing, Coach Freier was also a 2019 Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Coaching Award winner for promoting the values of honor, commitment, and courage in student athletes.


Prior to returning to Minnesota in 2017, Coach Freier was the head football coach of the Boiling Springs Bubblers (Boiling Springs, PA) for five seasons from 2012 - 2016Athe Bubblers head coach, Boiling Springs made back-to-back appearances in the Pennsylvania Inter-Scholastic Athletic Associations’ competitive District III playoffs in 2014 and 2015. During his tenure as Boiling Springs’ head coach, the Bubblers ran a pro-I and pistol power offense and 3-4 and 4-4 defensesWhile serving as the Bubblers head coach, Nate also spent one season as the offensive coordinator and, at different times, coached quarterbacks, offensive and defensive linemen, and tight ends. 

Before assuming the Boiling Springs head coaching responsibilities, Coach Freier served as the Bubbler’s offensive and defensive line coach for eight seasons. In that time me, Coach Freier worked in Pro I Power, Zone and Zone Read, Power Option, and Wing T offenses. Also, while a Bubbler assistant, Coach Freier served as the JV Head Coach for multiple seasons. In his time as a Bubbler Assistant, Boiling Springs won a division title (2005) and appeared in the District III playoffs on four separate occasions (2005, 2006, 2010, and 2011).

Between the 2000 through 2003 seasons, Coach Freier was both a paid and volunteer assistant with the Thomas A. Edison High School Eagles in Alexandria, VA where he primarily focused on offensive and defensive line.  

Outside of high school, Coach Freier’s other coaching stops include assistant head coach and defensive coordinator with an inter-unit Army eight-man football team at Fort Lewis, WA (1994) and volunteer offensive assistant for spring football practice with Benedictine College in Atchison, KS (2000).


Coach Freier originally hails from Red Wing, MN. He was the co-captain of the Wingers 1983 conference champion and state semi-finalist team. And, he later played safety for the Monheim Sharks in Germany’s American Football Bundesliga during the 1990 season.The Sharks were 1990 Bundesliga playoff participants.


Coach Freier is on a brief hiatus from the sideline because of professional demands.  Outside of football, Coach Freier is a national security professional currently working with the Department of Defense. Coach Freier is a former career Army officer with twenty years of military service in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. His military career included service in both the Persian Gulf and Iraq Wars. Coach Freier holds a bachelor’s degree in government from St. John’s University and master’s degrees from Troy State University and the Catholic University of America. While at the Department of Defense, Coach Freier and wife Jeanne reside in Arlington, VA. Coach Freier and Jeanne have two rising college freshman sons Aaron (St. John’s University) and Eli (Delaware Valley University).  They have three older daughters as well—Samantha and Katie (Seattle, WA) and Madeline (Enola, PA).
